A little something for Southern Rock fans

June 24th, 2010 | By mikearlo-wafx in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Last week Rickey Medlocke of Lynyrd Skynyrd called we had a chance to get caught up and I got to ask him about some Rock & Roll trivia that’s bothered me for a long time.  :- )

Random thoughts on a Thursday.

The last few weeks have just flown by and I have been dying to do a post about last week’s show at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater. Here is your one word review “WOW” Kansas led off in style, Foreigner finished it off nicely, but Styx was amazing. After all the shows over all these years (not to say I’m jaded or anything) but it takes a “great” performance to have me leave a venue after a show saying “wow”. This line up of Styx was spot on with the vocals, keyboard, and guitar work. And the way Tommy Shaw and J.Y. traded guitar riffs and lead work was almost as impressive as the whole group’s singing. I haven’t seen a band trade lead vocals between so many  guys so effortlessly since the last time I caught the Eagles. Seriously “WOW”.

On the home front last weekend was spent working on the finish trim in our (still being remodeled) Den, and my bud Rhys Thompson came over Sunday and we managed to hang my surround sound speakers and “hi-def” TV on the wall with NO wires showing Yeaaaa! My wife Lauren was thrilled by that achievement; she actually smiled and told us it looked “NICE” Woooo Whoooo!  She’s not real big on hi-tech audio & video toys, but she loves me so she indulges my obsessions. p.s. pic’s to follow soon. :- )

Ray Manzarek of the Doors calling…

June 9th, 2010 | By mikearlo-wafx in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

One of my favorite people to chat with called the other day Ray Manzarek the keyboard player for the Doors. He is not only a genuine nice guy he’s also an amazing storehouse of Rock & Roll knowledge and doesn’t mind sharing. Easy going with a positive attitude and a wonderful command of the language as interviews go Ray is someone that I always look forward to checking in with. H e and guitarist Robbie Krieger were at the Norva Tuesday night if you missed it you missed a major good time. Several of you have called to find out the name of their impressive new lead singer, and Ray mentioned it on Monday when he called in, but I wouldn’t attempt the spelling. So click on the link and check out our conversation.

Our pal Vincent at the MAACO on Portsmouth Blvd. called Friday to let me know I needed to clear a space in the driveway because Brigette’s car would be ready to roll Saturday morning. It turned out just the way she pictured it, you see she and Vince were the only ones that thought a “white” Hot Rod would be so beautiful. The girl has great taste! Now we have to start putting it back together, slap on the rally sport wheels and raised white letter B.F.Goodrich tires, freshen up the engine, and get a little work done on the interior, reinstall the bumpers, grill, lights, find a radiator ….other than that we’re ready to go. LOL

It’s HEEERE!
